It’s an organic process…

I can try to control the variables as much as possible, however, I can’t always predict the final outcome. Especially when I’m trying something new.

The first time I attempted to work with potassium chromium alum, I wanted to get a deep, dark crystal color. However I had never worked with it before, and tried cutting it with a neutral chemical that is colorless. I thought that it would help the crystal structure, however I couldn’t get the ratio right and most of my attempts did not produce crystals.

The few times it did produce crystals, they came out very light in color. The color reminded me of lavender, and I began referring to these pieces as my lavender series. Sometimes, you get happy little accidents that you fall in love with.
